FCT: Uprooted - Naomi Novik

First Chapter Thoughts for...

Uprooted by Naomi Novik

Our Dragon doesn’t eat the girls he takes, no matter what stories they tell outside our valley. We hear them sometimes, from travelers passing through. They talk as though we were doing human sacrifice, and he were a real dragon. Of course that’s not true: he may be a wizard and immortal, but he’s still a man, and our fathers would band together and kill him if he wanted to eat one of us every ten years. He protects us against the Wood, and we’re grateful, but not that grateful.

My review is now up.

I was very taken by the style in this preview, and found that even in a few pages Novik was able to make me care about the main characters and their potential loss.

Something about this reminds me of Howl’s Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones with the wizard who is rumored to eat girls and the girl who changes him. I may end up rolling my eyes a bit, but I’m pretty sure this will be a guilty pleasure. She’s 17, he’s immortal, what could go wrong? Unfortunately, I didn’t check out my friend reviews on Goodreads first, otherwise I might have seen Khanh’s review and given the purchase a second thought.

I think this was first recommended to me while I was reading Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo and raving to someone about it. Otherwise it was another book, probably His Majesty's Dragon from her Temeraire Series (FCT for that). And I just saw there's going to be a movie based on this book, produced by Ellen Degeneres.

Also, I just found this funny fanart on DeviantArt by LiberLibelula.

Status: I snapped up the kindle deal for 2.99 USD after reading the preview.

Verdict: Yes, I’m gonna read it soon.

Correction: in my FCT of Uprooted I said that a friend recommended that to me when she saw me reading Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo, but it was actually His Majesty's Dragon!
