Geekerella - Ashley Poston

Geekerella by Ashley Poston

I'd heard good things about this one and started reading it in a bookstore and could not put it down. Think Star Trek is to this what Harry Potter was to Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell.

Like the many Cinderella retellings out there, you probably know this story. Well, maybe not this exact story.

When Elle Wittimer hears that her favorite franchise is getting a reboot with a young soap star, she’s livid. She writes the most scathing blog post on it, which launches her into a stardom of her own. When the young star in person, Darien Freeman, reads it, he knows, despite how much he loves this franchise, that the cards are stacked against him and his doing well enough to win the hearts of fans is a long shot.

But then… well a lot of things happen and I don’t want to spoil you for any of them. As I said, you know the Cinderella story, you vaguely know the way things are gonna go. Throw in cosplay, bodyguards, overbearing managers, step-mothers, and some vegan food vs tennis showdown, and you’ll be on your way.

Poston isn't shy, and I'm grateful for this, about letting us know that Darien Freeman is Black and Southeast Asian. I think the word 'desi' is used at some point to describe him, but I'm unclear exactly what his mother's ethnicity is. In either case, the author isn't coy about cues regarding other characters ethnicities. Though there were some hints about a character's sexuality which didn't necessarily need to wait until the eleventh hour to be confirmed, that's hardly the worst I could say.

I’ll admit got teary a couple times during this book, and I really enjoyed how unrepentantly geeky it was. There was also a great resolution regarding the anonymity of the duo as they fell in love.

This book is silly, it’s delightful. Don’t expect it to rock your world, but between the familiar tale of Cinderella and the familiarity of fandom, expect a very comforting read.
